Sunflower Seed Meal

Sunflower Seed Meal (SSM) is a by-product obtained during the processing of sunflower seeds, known for its high protein and fiber content. It serves as an important nutritional source in the feed industry and is widely preferred in animal nutrition.

High-quality sunflower seed meal is a valuable feed ingredient, especially for ruminants. Due to its palatability, it is readily consumed by all livestock species. It is commonly included in the rations of dairy cows and beef cattle. For dairy cows, a daily intake of 2 to 2.5 kilograms is recommended.

How is sunflower seed meal produced?
Sunflower seed meal (SSM) is defined as the substance obtained by grinding the residual product left after oil is extracted from sunflower seeds using the solvent extraction method. In Türkiye, sunflower seed meal is commonly produced through either continuous pressing or solvent extraction techniques.

What are the nutritional values of sunflower seed meal?
The feeding value of sunflower seed meal varies depending on whether it contains hulls or is dehulled. Hulled sunflower meal typically contains around 15% crude protein and up to 38% cellulose. Dehulled sunflower meal, on the other hand, can reach up to 40% crude protein, with a reduced cellulose content of approximately 15%.
